This journal, kept from March to May, 1836, is Ellis's record of the voyage he made from New York to Mexico in order to take his post. Entries are frequent, but not daily, and include descriptions of Ellis's stay in New York and Boston while awaiting passage, events aboard ship, the weather, etc. Several pages of definitions of ship's terms are included in volume one. All entries are in pencil, with many lines scratched out or written over.
